Former McDonald’s global communications director Michon Ellis aims to fill a public relations niche in Chicago.
Ellis has opened Clout, a public relations firm that will support startups funded by venture-capital firms, as well as midsized companies that are growing at a fast pace.
To help attract clients to his new firm, Ellis said he has developed a proprietary process he is calling Enclave. Ellis said his system is specifically designed to help companies and brands grow their bottom line, influence the markets they serve and protect corporate reputations.
According to Ellis, it’s usually not a startup or midsize company’s products or services that causes a company to stumble or collapse altogether. Rather, as Ellis said in a statement: “Successful startups and midsize companies experiencing rapid growth often don’t see the public relations or communications issues catching fire and certainly don’t have a proper communications strategy in place to prevent or handle crisis issues internally or externally.”
He noted one industry in particular where companies could be susceptible.
“We can expect to see this play out many times over in the exploding cannabis sector,†he said.
Cannabis sales became legal in Illinois at the start of 2020.
Prior to Clout, Ellis founded and served as CEO of multicultural marketing communications agency LimeGreen Moroch. Prior to LimeGreen, Ellis was global communications director for Chicago-based burger behemoth McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE: MCD).
Headquartered in Chicago, Clout will work with affiliate public relations offices in New York City, Atlanta, Los Angeles and New Orleans. Clout’s target sectors are many and varied, including consumer products/services, food and beverage, cannabis, health care and beauty, beer, wine and spirits, manufacturing, government affairs, technology, travel and hospitality, and sports and entertainment.
